Crime in Gang-Plagued Haiti Hits Record High, UN Warns

The U.N. representative to Haiti has warned that the security situation in the country has deteriorated further, with major crimes reaching record highs. A report by the U.N. Secretary General highlights an increase in indiscriminate killings, kidnappings, rapes, and attacks in urban neighborhoods. The national police reported 1,239 homicides between July and September, compared to 577 in the same period last year, and 701 people were kidnapped, a 244% increase. The U.N. is also concerned about vigilante groups and hopes that the deployment of a multinational intervention force led by Kenya will improve the situation. The mission aims to help the overwhelmed Haitian police and pave the way for credible and inclusive elections.
