Flight services at Thiruvananthapuram Airport in India were halted for five hours to allow for the traditional ‘arattu’ procession of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple to pass through the runway. The procession, led by the head of the erstwhile Travancore royal family, included devotees and six elephants. The idols of Padmanabha Swamy, Narasima Moorthy, and Krishna Swami were taken to the nearby beach for rituals before being returned to the shrine. Flight services resumed after the procession concluded and the runway was cleaned. The airport has been pausing operations for the procession twice a year for many decades.
