19 Wildcats Set to Bring Back Scottish Highland Species – They’re Thriving in a Reintroduction Program

A Reintroduction Program in the Cairngorms National Park has successfully released 19 captive-bred Scottish Wildcats into their natural habitat. The cats are being tracked via GPS collars, but it is expected that not all of them will survive the winter. However, the breeding and reintroduction program, supported by various conservation groups, has another thirteen kittens growing up in captivity for future releases. The Scottish Wildcats were declared "functionally extinct in the wild" due to habitat loss and interbreeding with domesticated cats, but the conservation efforts aim to reintroduce 60 juveniles in the future.
