U.S. sending U.S. carrier strike group, air defense systems to Persian Gulf

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the Israel-Hamas war, the US will redeploy a carrier strike group to the Persian Gulf and send additional Air Defense Systems to the region, announced Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. He also placed additional US forces on "prepare to deploy orders," following discussions with President Biden on recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and its strike group will head to the Persian Gulf instead of the Mediterranean, and a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile battery and Patriot missile defense system will be deployed.
