Residents in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, are facing food shortages and skipping meals due to soaring rice and Cooking Oil Prices since the military junta took power in February 2021. The country's economy has suffered under the junta, with unemployment rising sharply and rampant inflation. Residents report that their wages have not increased to keep up with the rising prices. Destruction of farmland, unrealistic price controls, transport restrictions, and fighting have all contributed to the surging rice prices. The price of cooking oil has also doubled or tripled, leading to a shortage and forcing customers to buy cheaper palm oil.
