The US electric grid is getting a $3.5 billion upgrade

The US Department of Energy has announced a $3.5 billion investment to upgrade the country's aging Electric Grid, the largest-ever investment in this area. The funding aims to prepare the grid for more renewable energy capacity and prevent blackouts caused by climate disasters. The projects will include building new microgrids and large-scale transmission lines, as well as general upgrades to accommodate greater loads of electricity and improve emergency monitoring systems. The investment is expected to bring 35 gigawatts of renewable energy online, contributing to President Biden's goal of moving away from fossil fuels by 2035. The projects also prioritize disadvantaged communities and aim to create good-paying union jobs.
