Professor stands by attending controversial Russian conference

University of Manitoba professor Radhika Desai is facing criticism for attending the Valdai Discussion Club in Russia, organized by a Russian think-tank on Canada's sanctions list for spreading disinformation. Desai asked Russian President Vladimir Putin about a scandal involving a Ukrainian veteran of a Nazi unit during the event, which critics argue helped Moscow's propaganda efforts against Ukraine. The forum was sanctioned by Ottawa in September for generating and disseminating disinformation and propaganda. Desai defends her attendance, stating it is a privilege for an academic to meet and converse with key figures at such events.
