Senegal: Judge overturns removal of opposition figure Ousmane Sonko from electoral roll

A judge in Senegal has overturned the removal of opposition Figure Ousmane Sonko from the electoral rolls, allowing him to stand as a presidential candidate in February 2024. Sonko's lawyers challenged his disbarment, arguing that there was no justification for his removal. Sonko, who came third in the 2019 presidential election, was found guilty of debauching a minor and sentenced to two years in prison. He has also been imprisoned on other charges, including calling for insurrection. The State plans to appeal against the judge's decision and maintains that Sonko cannot be a candidate.
