A flash flood in northeast India, caused by the breach of a dam in Sikkim, has resulted in the destruction of a major dam downstream and affected parts of Sikkim and West Bengal. The flood has resulted in at least 75 confirmed deaths and more than a hundred people still missing. The flooding has been attributed to a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), possibly triggered by intense rainfall or an earthquake. Researchers have noted the increasing water levels in the glacial reservoir due to melting glaciers caused by global warming. The disaster has been described as both man-made and exacerbated by climate change.
