Scientists Have Created Natural Sponges That Soak Up Nanoplastics

Chinese scientists have developed experimental Sponges made of starch and gelatin that can effectively absorb microplastics and nanoplastic particles. These lightweight and biodegradable sponges have been tested in various environments, including seawater and tap water, and have successfully removed around 90% of plastic particles. One potential application is to use these sponges in washing machines to capture synthetic clothing fibers that are released during the rinse cycle. However, the current manufacturing process involves the use of formaldehyde, which the researchers are working to replace.
