Ugandan startup TEXFAD is buying discarded Banana stems and turning them into biodegradable handicrafts. Uganda has the highest banana consumption rate in the world and is Africa's top producer, with bananas contributing up to 25% of the daily calorie intake in rural areas. TEXFAD collaborates with farmers' groups and pays $2.7 per kilogram of dried banana fibre. The company exports its products to Europe and is also experimenting with fabrics made from banana fibres. TEXFAD aims to create extra income for farmers, contribute to Uganda's industrialization, and provide environmentally-friendly alternatives to synthetic products.
