Niger: Junta revises 2023 budget as sanctions bite over July coup

Niger's military regime, which seized power in a coup in July, has announced a significant reduction in the country's 2023 national Budget due to international sanctions. The regime states that the sanctions have led to a drop in both external and internal revenues, forcing a revision of the budget forecasts. The revised budget amounts to 1,981 billion CFA francs ($3 billion), a 40% decrease from the initially planned 3,291 billion CFA francs ($5 billion). The sanctions, imposed by ECOWAS and condemned by Western countries, have resulted in inflation and shortages of food and medicine.
