6 Held Killing of Ecuador Presidential Candidate are Slain in Prison

Six Colombians who were arrested for the assassination of a candidate in Ecuador's Presidential election were killed inside a prison in Guayaquil. The prison authority identified the men as the alleged assassins of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. The killings occurred in Ecuador's largest and most dangerous prison, Litoral Penitentiary. Villavicencio had reported threats from affiliates of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel, and his alleged hitmen were captured shortly after the crime. President Guillermo Lasso vowed to uncover the truth behind the killings and return to Ecuador to address the situation. Ecuador is set to hold a runoff presidential election on October 15.
