Kachin rebels press villagers to move to make way for jade mining

Ethnic Kachin rebels in Myanmar are pressuring over 600 villagers to move out of a village in order to take over gold and Jade Mining in the area to fund their fight against the ruling junta. The Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) is negotiating payment with the villagers in exchange for their homes and resettlement costs. Some residents have already resettled in another village, while others have resisted giving up their homes. The KIO sometimes collaborates with Chinese companies in mining rare earth minerals in the region, where illegal mining has been a longstanding issue.
