Burkina Faso's transitional government has declared former President Thomas Sankara, who was killed in a coup in 1987, a "hero of the nation". The government aims to honor Sankara's cardinal values and perpetuate the Republic's foundation. Sankara, a pan-African icon, came to power in a coup in 1983 but was assassinated by his number two, Blaise Compaoré, in 1987. Compaoré remained in power until a popular uprising in 2014. In April 2022, he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for his role in Sankara's assassination. A ceremony to honor the victims will be held on 15 October 2023.
