CRTC registration for podcasts and streaming companies draws criticism

Canada's broadcasting regulator, the CRTC, has announced that online Streaming and podcasting services with annual revenue of $10 million or more in the country will have to register with it by November 28. The move is part of the implementation of the Online Streaming Act, which requires streaming and online services to contribute to the domestic media ecosystem. Critics have raised concerns that the registration requirement may lead to heavier regulation in the future. However, the CRTC has clarified that smaller podcasters and those hosting content on their own websites will likely be exempt from registration.
