Farmers are turning to Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) to improve soil pH and productivity. ERW involves spreading crushed volcanic rock, usually basalt, on farmland to raise soil pH levels and enhance carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere. Start-up companies collect rock powder from mines or quarries and transport it to farms. ERW is based on scientific research that shows carbon dioxide reacts with water to form a weak acid, which then bonds with minerals in volcanic stone, permanently removing CO2 from the air. ERW has the potential to sequester more than 200 gigatons of CO2 over 75 years.
