Manitoba founded by Métis but oppressive history soon made Indigenous premiership impossible

Manitoba, a province in Canada, has never elected a female or First Nations premier in its 153-year History. Heather Stefanson recently became the province's first female premier, but she did not win an election, instead assuming the position after Brian Pallister resigned. Wab Kinew, a First Nations candidate, has the edge in the upcoming election. However, Kinew aims to be the best premier, not just the first Indigenous one. Manitoba's only Indigenous premier was John Norquay, who served from 1878 to 1887. Indigenous people in Manitoba have faced suppression and challenges throughout history.
