India Successfully Reduces Emissions Rate By 33% Over 14 Years And Is On Track To Meet All Targets

India has successfully reduced its greenhouse gas Emissions by one-third since 2009 through increased renewable energy production and expanded forest cover, according to officials. The progress has positioned India to meet its emissions targets, with emissions intensity being a key metric used to assess reductions. India's annual emissions reductions have accelerated, particularly between 2016 and 2019, and its forest cover has expanded by 2,000 square miles, acting as a carbon sink. Additionally, renewable energy sources now contribute to 25.3% of India's total power generation. Officials stress that reaching emission targets does not require shutting down coal-fired power plants.
