A drug that can regrow teeth in mice is entering clinical trials in humans. The drug, developed by dental scientist Takahashi in Japan, targets a protein that suppresses the growth of new teeth. Clinical trials in healthy human adults will begin in July next year, followed by trials in children with anodontia, a condition where they are born without some teeth. The drug has already been successful in regrowing teeth in ferrets. Anodontia affects about 1% of the population, with 10% of those patients having oligodontia, where they lack six or more natural teeth.
