“Critical state”: Swiss glaciers lose 10% of their volume in 2 years

Switzerland's alpine Glaciers have lost 10% of their volume in just two years, a clear sign of the critical state of the climate, according to the Swiss Academy of Sciences. The rate of ice loss in 2023 was the second worst on record, following a 6% loss in 2022. Extreme weather conditions have caused the disappearance of smaller glaciers and the collapse of glacier tongues. The record ice loss is attributed to high summer temperatures and low snow volumes during the winter. Glacier experts warn that without a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, larger glaciers could disappear within a generation.
