Millions more students to receive free school meals under expanded U.S. program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a rule change that will allow millions more students in low-income communities to receive free breakfast and lunch at School. Under the new rule, schools where 25% of families participate in income-based public benefits will be eligible for the federal government to cover the cost of free meals for all enrolled students, down from the previous threshold of 40%. This change is expected to make roughly 3,000 additional school districts serving over 5 million students eligible for free meals. The rule change expands access to universal meals through the Community Eligibility Provision program.
