Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia broke the women's world record at the Berlin Marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 11 minutes, 53 seconds. She beat the previous record set by Brigid Kosgei of Kenya in 2019 by more than two minutes. Assefa was followed by Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya and Magdalena Shauri of Tanzania. In the men's race, Eliud Kipchoge won for the fifth time but did not break his own record. Kipchoge's time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, 42 seconds was more than a minute and a half off his previous record. The Berlin Marathon is known for its flat terrain and cool weather, making it popular for record-breaking attempts.
