Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia broke the women's world record at the Berlin Marathon, finishing in a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 53 seconds. She beat the previous record set by Brigid Kosgei by more than two minutes. Eliud Kipchoge won the men's race for the fifth time but couldn't break his own record. Kipchoge finished in a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, 42 seconds, over a minute and a half off his previous record. The Berlin Marathon saw protests from the environmental group Last Generation, but the event went on successfully.
