US Pledges New Aid for Haiti, Urges UN to Authorize Security Mission

The United States has pledged an additional $65 million in aid for Haiti's police force and is urging the United Nations Security Council to support a multinational Security Mission to combat gang violence in the country. The mission, led by Kenya, could deploy within months. While not providing troops, the US will work with Congress to provide $100 million in logistical and financial assistance for the mission. The US has also imposed new visa bans on former and current Haitian officials deemed to be enabling the violence. Haiti has been without elected representatives since January.
