What the 2020 census shows us about race and ethnicity in the U.S. right now

The 2020 Census data released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that there are 3.5 million residents in the United States who identify as Middle Eastern or North African. Venezuelans were the fastest-growing Hispanic group over the past decade, while Chinese and Asian Indians were the two largest Asian groups. The census provided more detailed race and ethnicity data than ever before, with counts for about 1,550 racial, ethnic, and tribal groups. The data also revealed that Mexicans are the largest Hispanic group in the U.S., and among white respondents, English was the most common background identified.
