EU voices “solidarity” with French envoy in Niger

The European Union expressed solidarity with France's ambassador to Niger, who refused to comply with expulsion orders from Niger's military leaders. The EU's top diplomat also voiced support for President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been under house arrest. The bloc's foreign ministers met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to discuss the situation. The EU called for a reassessment of their strategy in the Sahel region, where France has led efforts to combat jihadists. The EU has invested 600 million euros in civilian and military missions in the Sahel over the past decade.
