Migrants Burst Into Southern Mexico Asylum Office Demanding Papers

Migrants, primarily from Haiti, stormed an asylum office in southern Mexico demanding papers. They overwhelmed National Guard officers and police stationed at the office, knocking over barricades in the process. The incident occurred due to frustration over long wait times for appointments at the office. Many migrants intend to use the papers to travel to the U.S. border. Mexico has seen a significant increase in asylum claims this year, with over 100,000 so far. The Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance, which runs the office, has been receiving around 2,000 appointment requests per day. The agency predicts that asylum applications could reach 150,000 by the end of the year.
