A Toronto landlord is banning electric vehicles on its property. Tenants’ advocates say that’s ‘unreasonable’

A Toronto Landlord, Oberon Development Corporation, has banned electric transportation vehicles, including electric bikes and motorbikes, from its building complex. Notices were posted at 110 and 120 Jameson Avenue in Parkdale, citing potential fire hazards with lithium batteries. Tenants’ advocates argue that the ban is unreasonable and may violate tenants’ rights and Ontario’s Human Rights Code. The Landlord and Tenant Board did not directly respond to the ban, and Toronto Fire Services reported 47 fires involving lithium ion batteries this year. The ban also impacts tenants with disabilities who rely on Electric Vehicles for mobility.
