Competing Interests for UN Spotlight at Annual Meeting

The upcoming U.N. General Assembly is expected to focus on the war in Ukraine, but developing countries are hoping to highlight issues important to them, such as development, the economy, and climate. Over 140 heads of state and government are attending the assembly, which follows recent high-level meetings in Indonesia, India, and Cuba. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be present at the assembly for the first time since Russia invaded his country in February 2022. Developing nations are also pushing for action on Sustainable Development, climate change, and pandemic prevention. The U.N. hopes to secure a commitment of $500 billion a year to help meet Sustainable Development Goals.
