Abortion providers in South Carolina are challenging a strict new ban that restricts access to abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. The state's all-male Supreme Court upheld the so-called "fetal heartbeat" law, but noted that the medical definitions provided by the state Legislature were unclear. Planned Parenthood argues that the ban should be interpreted to take effect after approximately nine weeks, when most of the main parts of the heart have developed. Since the ban took effect, around 91% of patients at Planned Parenthood facilities have been denied abortions, with 58% of those being nine weeks pregnant or less.
