Dry states taking Mississippi River water isn’t a new idea. But some mayors want to kill it

Mayors from cities along the Mississippi River are expected to vote on whether to support a new compact among the river’s 10 states at an annual meeting of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative. The compact would aim to protect the river’s water levels and ecology, coordinate responses to disasters, and resolve conflicts among the states. However, the process would require buy-in from all 10 states and federal approval. The fear of water export has previously led to the establishment of the Great Lakes Compact, which protects water resources in the region.
