Parents struggle as 27 hospitalized in Calgary daycare E. coli outbreak

An Outbreak of shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) at Daycare Sites in Calgary has resulted in 27 children being hospitalized, with 19 of them in serious condition. The outbreak forced the closure of 11 daycare sites over the Labour Day weekend. The health-care agency suspects that the source of the outbreak is food contamination from a central kitchen that supplies the daycare sites. Children under five are particularly vulnerable to the complications of STEC, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure. A dedicated clinic has been established to monitor affected patients.
