School’s parents should have been told ‘immediately’ about sex abuse allegations, Yukon Ombudsman says

The Yukon Ombudsman released a report stating that the Yukon education department should have immediately informed parents of Hidden Valley Elementary School about sexual abuse allegations against an educational assistant in 2019. However, the department remained silent until a news story forced them to acknowledge the situation a year-and-a-half later. The report concluded that the department's delay in informing parents was unwarranted, unfair, and a "communications failure." The report also highlighted that the department did not abide by its communication policy and did not use its crisis communications manual. The ombudsman will issue a second report in the fall examining the Safer Schools Action Plan's effectiveness in addressing the issues identified.
