Cody Finke, CEO of Brimstone, developed a carbon-negative cement to combat climate change. Conventional cement production accounts for 8% of global carbon emissions and is produced through a process that uses carbon-heavy materials like coal and used tires. Finke discovered that calcium silicate, found in common rocks, can be used as a substitute for carbon-heavy materials. The firing process also leaves behind magnesium, which permanently sequesters CO2. Brimstone plans to build a pilot plant in Nevada and has received investment from Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures. The carbon-negative cement is chemically and physically identical to industry standards and cheaper once mass-produced.
