Almost 40 dead as cyclone inundates southern Brazilian state

Flooding from a cyclone in southern Brazil has killed almost 40 people and left 2,300 homeless, with over 60 cities affected. The storm has been Rio Grande do Sul state's deadliest, causing widespread destruction and trapping motorists in vehicles. The death toll is disputed, with regional officials reporting higher numbers. Rescue efforts have focused on the Taquari Valley, but helicopters have been sent to the Rio Pardo Valley as well. Heavy rains are expected to continue in some areas, while poorly regulated home building and climate change are exacerbating the impact of weather-related disasters in Brazil.
