A United Nations children's agency report has revealed that a record number of children are leaving their homes in Latin America and the Caribbean in search of a better life, risking disease, injury, and abuse. At least 40,000 children crossed the dangerous Darien jungle last year, compared to 29,000 in 2021. In the first six months of 2023 alone, over 40,000 children made the perilous journey. Gang violence, poverty, instability, and climate-related events are driving these children from their homes. UNICEF is urging for a stronger humanitarian response and the expansion of safe migration pathways to protect their rights and futures.
