Last week, The Ocean Cleanup deployed their System 03, which is three times larger than previous technology, to clean the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The system is capable of cleaning an area the size of a football field every five seconds. Since 2021, their smaller systems have extracted over 275 tons of plastic from the Garbage Patch. System 03 consists of a floating barrier towed between two vessels, with a screen that captures floating plastic. The plastic is then recycled into sustainable new products. The organization is aiming to rid the oceans of 90% of plastic trash by 2040.
