Prisoners Release Police, Guards, Taken Hostage in Ecuador Prisons

Fifty guards and seven police officers who were held Hostage in Ecuadorian prisons by criminal groups have been released. The government believes the hostage situation was a response to their efforts to regain control of several correctional facilities in the country. Explosions, including car bombs and explosive devices, have been reported across Ecuador, with criminal gangs believed to be behind the attacks. The violence is seen as a result of power struggles within prisons and the competition between gangs for drug-trafficking routes. The increase in violence has been attributed to a power vacuum following the killing of a gang leader in 2020.
