A group of Gabonese military officers announced on television that they were ending the current regime and cancelling President Ali Bongo Ondimba's election victory. Gunfire was heard in the capital, Libreville, during the announcement. The officers stated that all institutions of the republic had been dissolved and that the recent election did not meet the conditions for a transparent and credible ballot. They also closed the country's borders until further notice. President Bongo, who has been in power for 14 years, was declared the winner of the election with 64.27% of the vote.
