Niger: Paris backs ‘president Bazoum’ and ‘ECOWAS’ military action should it be the case’

French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated his support for Niger's ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during a foreign policy speech. Macron stated that France would not change its position in condemning the coup and expressed support for diplomatic and military action by Ecowas. The French ambassador to Niger was ordered to leave the country within 48 hours by the Nigerien Foreign Ministry, accusing him of ignoring a meeting invitation and citing actions contrary to Niger's interests. The CNSP, the ruling body following the coup, has appointed a new government, and ECOWAS has imposed sanctions and threatened to send troops.
