Merchant shipping is turning back to wind power with the use of large wing sails called WindWings. The Pyxis Ocean Cargo Ship, chartered by Cargill, is the first vessel to be retrofitted with two WindWings, which are expected to generate fuel savings of up to 30%. The project is co-funded by the European Union and aims to semi-decarbonize existing vessels. The performance of the WindWings will be closely monitored to improve their design and operation, with the goal of informing the adoption process across Cargill's fleet and the industry.
