DR Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi to seek re-election

Felix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, will seek re-election in the 2023 presidential election, as confirmed by his ruling party, the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS). Tshisekedi was also voted as the head of the party for the next five years. The UDPS is fielding 495 candidates for the national legislative elections and is proposing candidates in all constituencies for the provincial legislative elections. Tshisekedi's main competitor, Martin Fayulu, has stated that he will not run unless changes are made to the current electoral commission. The government of Tshisekedi has been accused of repressing and intimidating the opposition by Human Rights Watch. The country is also dealing with an armed rebellion by the M23 insurgency, which is said to be backed by Rwanda.
