Support Grows for Sustainable Development, a ‘Bioeconomy,’ in the Amazon

Support is growing for Sustainable Development and the establishment of a "bioeconomy" in the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon Summit in Belem saw policymakers express eagerness to protect the rainforest and provide livelihoods for its residents. However, there is little consensus on what a bioeconomy should look like. Some successful examples of sustainable enterprises in the Amazon include a cosmetics company that uses ingredients from traditional communities and family farms, and a company that produces sneakers for Parisians using rubber from local tappers. Para state in Brazil is the only state with a bioeconomy plan, while neighboring Amazonas state is developing a similar plan with US financial support.
