British Museum director Hartwig Fischer quits over stolen treasures

The director of the British Museum, Hartwig Fischer, has resigned following the museum's failure to uncover the theft of more than 1,500 items despite warnings from whistleblowers. The resignation comes after a week of revelations about the mishandled investigation. Fischer's departure leaves the museum in a state of crisis, and an interim director will need to be appointed while the search for a permanent replacement begins. Fischer's deputy, Jonathan Williams, is also facing calls to resign.
