Keith Spicer, Canada’s first official languages commissioner, has died

Keith Spicer, Canada's first official languages commissioner, has passed away at the age of 89. Spicer served as commissioner from 1970 to 1977, promoting the Official Languages Act and advocating for bilingualism. He helped establish the group Canadian Parents for French and worked to increase French immersion school programs. Spicer also created the board game Oh Canada! to promote bilingualism. He was honored as an officer of the Order of Canada in 1978. Spicer later served as the commissioner of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission from 1989 to 1996.
