Japan has begun the gradual release of treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. The release will eventually pump over a million metric tons of wastewater into the sea, which has reached near full storage capacity. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) is responsible for the operation and plans to increase the release to 7,800 cubic meters over 17 days. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that the planned discharge meets international safety standards, but neighboring countries such as China and South Korea have expressed concern and implemented bans on Japanese aquatic products.
