Private schools and grammars see sharpest drop in top GCSE grades

Private schools and grammar schools have experienced a significant drop in top GCSE grades as the UK government aims to return to pre-pandemic standards. Around 200,000 fewer GCSE entries achieved a Grade 7 or above, resulting in a fall in the share of top grades to 22%, down from 26.3% last year. Measures were implemented to combat grade inflation caused by the pandemic, which saw exams replaced by teacher assessments. While Private Schools recorded the biggest fall in top grades, grammar schools saw the largest drop of any school type.
