AI brings researchers one step closer to restoring speech in people with paralysis

Researchers at the University of California have made advancements in Restoring Speech for people with brain injuries using artificial intelligence (AI). In a clinical trial, a participant diagnosed with locked-in syndrome, who had been unable to speak for 18 years, was able to have a conversation using an online avatar that spoke the phrases she was thinking. The technology, which converts brain signals into words, is still in the early stages but is seen as a significant development in improving communication for people with speech difficulties caused by brain injuries or conditions such as ALS.
