“Carnival Atmosphere” – Man suffered ‘worst ever’ death after being trapped in underground passageway

Floyd Collins, an avid Cave explorer, tragically died in 1925 after becoming trapped in Sand Cave in Kentucky. He had hoped to develop the cave into a tourist attraction, but instead, his plight became a national spectacle. Thousands of people gathered to watch the rescue mission, which was plagued with difficulties and arguments among the rescuers. Collins was eventually discovered dead, and his body was initially laid to rest on his family's farm before being moved to Crystal Cave. Eventually, in 1989, Collins was given a final burial at Mammoth Cave Baptist Church Cemetery.
